Mineral-Loy is a distributer of premium Foundry Grade Chromite Sand sourced only from reputable miners and wash plants. In the production process, raw Chrome Ore is mined and crushed before beneficiation using gravitational and magnetic methods. These methods include spirals, counter current hindered settling columns and drum magnets. Following beneficiation, the material is classified and either stockpiled as Wet Foundry Chromite Sand or dried and stored in bulk silos for discharge into bulk bags or tankers. Numerous points in the production process provide vacuum openings to remove as much fines as possible, while regular sampling is done during discharge to ensure quality is maintained.
Some of the desirable characteristics of Foundry Chromite Sand is the high Cr2O3 level of 46 % MIN, coupled with the low SiO2 level of 1,0% MAX. (typical is closer to 0,55%). This ensures high refractoriness at metal casting temperatures in mould and core materials. When this is coupled with the chemically basic nature of the sand it makes an ideal mould material for high manganese steels (typified by ‘Hadfield Manganese Steel’). The high heat absorption rate also finds benefits where parts of the mould or core needs to be chilled but cannot accept external or internal metal chills.
Mineral-Loy’s Foundry Chromite Sand is offered in a 44-52 AFS size distribution range and is predominantly shipped in 1 metric ton bulk bags.”
