Milled ferro silicon is a critical ferroalloy comprised primarily of iron and silicon, with trace elements including aluminium and titanium which enhances its corrosion resistance properties. Its production involves a meticulous process, where silica (SiO2) is reduced with coke in the presence of iron (usually in the form of steel scrap or millscale) to form an alloy. The resultant material is meticulously milled into various angular shaped particle sizes, ranging from fine powders to coarser grains, to meet precise specifications. The different grades are categorized by their particle size distribution with the following grades being offered by Mineral-Loy; 65D, 100D, 150D, 270D and 270F.
Milled ferro silicon is integral to dense media separation (DMS) processes, used for separating minerals based on density variations. Mixed with water, milled ferro silicon forms a dense suspension with a specific gravity ideal for separating heavier minerals from lighter ones. As the mixture flows through DMS cyclones or baths, heavier minerals sink while lighter ones float, allowing for effective separation. Milled ferro silicon’s high density, stability in suspension, magnetism, corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness make it a preferred choice of media for DMS applications. It is widely used in mineral processing for recovering diamonds, base metals, ores, and in scrap metal recycling for separating ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Milled ferrosilicon is primarily utilized for applications where a density below 3.2 kg/m3 needs to be achieved in the bath or cyclone. The selection of size is influenced by the type and size of the material being treated, the type and size of separation vessel used, the desired density of separation and lastly the degree of separation precision required.
