Recarburiser or Carburiser is a high-purity carbon containing material (99+ %) used to increase the carbon content in molten metals, primarily used in steel and cast and ductile iron production. It is an inseparable component of steel and ferrous foundry production in modern metallurgy.
Recarburiser plays a crucial role in adjusting the carbon levels to meet specific requirements during the melting or refining process thereby influencing the physical and mechanical properties such as hardness, strength or chips formation of the finished product.
There are several types of Recarburiser used in the iron and steel industry for different applications. The specific grade required depends on the types of iron castings or steel being produced. Mineral-Loy currently focuses on the sale of calcined coke (both pet and pitch coke) with low ash and volatiles used in downstream refining/carbon adjustment. Here is a summary are the grades currently available:
- PROCARB SG: This an ultra-low sulphur (0.05 % max.) and ultra-low nitrogen (0.05 % max.) recarburiser designed in South Africa for SG/ductile iron foundries. It offers consistently highly soluble carbon with very low sulphur and nitrogen replacing the high energy intensive Graphitised Petroleum Cokes (GPC). Environmentally, it is also your best choice due to its low emissions.
It is available in size 0.5 – 6 mm packed in either 1 MT bulk bags, 25 kg paper bags or 20 kg paper bags.
- INTERCARB 050: This is a medium sulphur (0.5 % max) recarburiser for SG/ductile and grey cast iron castings which can tolerate an intermediary sulphur content. This works very well when combined with Sorelmetal.
It is available in size range 0.5 – 6 mm and 1 – 6 mm packed in either 1 MT bulk bags, 25 kg paper bags or 20 kg paper bags.
- PROCARB LSN: This is an intermediary product between PROCARB SG and INTERCARB 050. With a sulphur content of 0.18 % max and nitrogen of 1.0 % max, these are low enough to maximise the tensile strength of the castings.
It is available in size 0.5 – 6 m packed in either 1 MT bulk bags, 25 kg paper bags or 20 kg paper bags.
- CARBON 99: This grade was specifically developed for grey/cast iron foundries designed to offer very high soluble carbon material with elevated sulphur levels thereby eliminating the need for resulphurisation before inoculation. Still with elevated carbon at 99 %, CARBON 99 is highly soluble delivering extremely attractive carbon recoveries. It also has the added benefit of sulphur at 1.0 % max whilst Ash and Volatiles are still kept low, making it suitable for both grey/cast iron foundries and also steel applications.
It is available in size 0.5 – 6 mm, 1 – 6 mm and 3 – 6 mm packed in either 1 MT bulk bags, 25 kg paper bags or 20 kg paper bags.
